>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>  O  <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

(*) major:  a student's principal subject or course /  a student specializing in a specified subject: a math major, a major in education, an anthropology major, etc.

Property man
As you know, I’m a teacher and I’m very pleased working in this university, but if I had to choose a new job, it would be something totally unrelated to education: I’d like to work as a building contractor.
This kind of job involves buying run-down houses or flats with the purpose of refurbishing them to resell them later at a higher price. Therefore, this would be both an indoors and an outdoors job, since I would have to be in charge of improving both the rooms, and the facade and roof of the homes. And this job would also entail travelling around the city all the time, to visit potential homes, the houses being remodelled and the suppliers.
In addition, for this kind of job I would need to take some courses on construction to get some basic skills, such as plumbing, carpentry, brickwork, etc. I’m very good with my hands, so I’m sure I would learn easily. When I was a kid I used to do repairs at home and some time  ago I had the chance to refurbish my ex flat, so I already have some basic knowledge.
With regard to timetable, I would need to work long hours and weekends from time to time, but I think it would be worth, because, since I would be my own boss, I would get long holidays.
And last, but not least, regarding salary, I know some people who have been doing this kind of job for some time, and they’ve told me that if you are good at it, you can make good money. However my main motivation would come from doing something I truly enjoy.

USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES:

-I’ve taken… / I’m doing a major in… /
-I’m thinking of working as/in… / I’d like to work as …/
-I’m considering to work as/in…/
-I’m planning to … / I have in mind to… / I’d love to…/
-I’ve decided to… /-I’m playing with idea of…  __ing /
 -I’m hoping to… /
-I can’t choose between …. or ../ I’m torn between …. and .… / It's a toss-up between .… and ....
 -It looks like I’m going to… /
-I’m not 100% sure, but I might …/
 -I’d like to get a job as…/ I hope to get a job in… /-I wouldn’t like to…/
-I wouldn´t mind .......ing.  Ex. I wouldn't mind working Saturdays from time to time.
- I’m good at …..ing (organizing... / planning...)
-I’m good with… (money, numbers,etc)/     I’m terrible at…./
-I become (nervous) about ___ing  / I am very confident in… __ing /
- I can… / I can’t… /

- Some aspects to consider could be: Salary - Benefits - Location – Hours - Co-workers  - work atmosphere/environment.

Wiiiiiiilmaaaaa! Come open the door!!!! Yabba dabba doo!!!!
Do these words ring a bell? Yesssss. Bingo!!! They are typical words by Pedro Picapiedra, as we know him in Chile (Fred Flinstone in the original version in English), the main character in Los Picapiedras (The Flinstones), my favourite cartoon when I was a kid. I don’t watch cartoons anymore, but I used to watch The Flinstones almost every weekend as a child and I really enjoyed it.
I used to like this cartoon because it was funny to see how the characters lived in the Stone age, but their way of living was no different from our modern life stlyes. It was very funny for me to see the rudimentary telephones, machines, cars, etc that they had. All the appliances didn’t run on electricity but they were powered by animals or the people themselves instead.  For example, to make his car go, Pedro has to get into it,  sit and start running.
The cartoon is about Pedro and his family, his neighbours, the people in his neighbourhood and at his workplace. And it’s all about how Pedro gets into trouble most of the time, or about family conflicts,  or Pedro’s adventures.
I think the Simpsons were created after the Flinstones. In both cartoons men are simple and not very intelligent while women are more clever. The difference is that the Simpsons are very ironical, have a lot of dark sense of humour and portray the worst of “Usan” (American) people.

Holidays are the best part of our lives. I’ve had so many wonderful holidays that it’s difficult to say which have been the best , but probably the most memorable ones are the days I spent in  London back in 1991.

I remember how excited I was because I had only seen sights of this city in some movies and on the pages of the English text books that I studied with at the university.  It has been my best holidays ever because it was like a dream come true when all the things I had seen in pictures came alive, but I was part of that reality this time!  I did so many things there:  I saw the Houses of Parliament, the Big Ben, the Tower of London, Thames River; went window shopping in Harrods;  walked along the Serpentine -the artifical lake in Hide Park;  went shopping  in Waterstones -the famous bookshop; had a “nice cuppa” tea in Covent Garden, and so on and so forth.
My Chilean and British friends made sure that I went to as many places as possible, so  they took me the best museums and art galleries, the amazing antique fair in Portobello Market Road,  the lively Camdem Town Market, the beautiful Holland Park, and a long etcetera.

Besides having fun,  I also took up a course to improve my English skills, so I had to spend some time studying and doing homework, but I enjoyed doing that. And I also learnt a lot of new things just by watching television.

I also took the advantage of the proximity and visited some other European cities like, the romantic Paris, the colourful Lisbon, and the the spectacular Amsterdam.  I took lots of pictures, but that was a long time before digital cameras were available, so I only have printed photos of that trip.

As you can see I had so much fun, did so many amazing things, and went through so many good experiences that I will never forget those amazing days in London.

POST 1: A COUNTRY I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT

Today you can choose between two topics to write about:  A COUNTRY I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT or THE BEST PLACE I'VE EVER BEEN TO.

COLOURFUL GUATEMALA.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” This quote was written by St. Augustine and I absolutely agree with him on this one.  Travelling is one of the things I enjoy the most in life.   I’ve been to many places but Guatemala is one of the countries I have always wanted to visit but have never been to.
I’d like to visit Guatemala because I have heard lots of people say that Antigua and Chichicastenango –two of the most important tourist places there- are even more colourful and interesting than some Mexican cities that I have already visited. Antigua is a city which was destroyed by an earthquake centuries ago, but  then it was rebuilt and became the most beautiful colonial Guatemalan city, and Chichicastenango is a place that has an important market where you can buy good fruit and vegetables, along with high quality handcraft –which is something I’m very interested in.
If I went there I would like to walk around the places, eat in nice restaurants, talk to the locals, visit the museums and buy some textiles and pottery. However I wouldn’t like to work or live there, because I think that after spending a few months in those cities I would probably get bored -I’m a city person and I would surely miss the things that a big city like Santiago can offer.
As the saying goes: Where there's a will, there's a way, so I'm saving money and one day lady luck will help me make another dream come true.
